LONG ISLAND, NY — Severe thunderstorms could hit Long Island Wednesday, a day after storms caused thousands of power outages on the island.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until 11 p.m. Wednesday. Wind gusts up to 70 mph and quarter-sized hail are possible.

"Ample surface heating will allow for the atmosphere to become unstable enough to support the potential for the development of convection this afternoon," the National Weather Service said in a forecast discussion Wednesday afternoon.
