To further advance the quality, state-of-the-art care provided at SSUH, Linda and John Bohlsen donated $5 million this past September to create the Linda and John Bohlsen Neurosciences Center, which offers 24/7 availability for patient consultations, transfers and full neurosurgical and neuroendovascular care.
Recently updated with new operating room equipment including the state-of the-art Zeiss microscope and Brainlab navigation system, the center is uniquely qualified to treat ruptured and unruptured brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and complex brain tumors with advanced microsurgery.
Included within the center is the new Linda and John Bohlsen Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (ICU), which is managed by neurointensivist physicians who are fellowship-trained in neurocritical care. With specialized equipment and intensive bedside care tailored to the unique needs of the neuroscience patient, neuroscience ICUs have been associated with shorter lengths of stay and better outcomes in comparison to general ICUs. These additional services at SSUH provide a higher level of care for patients with complicated conditions such as stroke, neurotrauma, brain tumors, seizures and brain bleeds.
Dr. Chalif leads SSUH’s department of neurosurgery. He's a renowned neurosurgeon who came to the hospital last year from North Shore University Hospital with 34 years of neurosurgical experience. Under his leadership, SSUH’s general neurosurgery program evolved into a comprehensive center treating the most complex neurosurgical and endovascular conditions.
Working closely with Dr. Chalif, neurosurgeon Justin Thomas, MD, serves as the department’s vice chair and has practiced exclusively at SSUH for the past seven years. To further build SSUH’s neurosurgery program, Dr. Chalif has spearheaded the recruitment of Dr. Lim-Hing, as well as:
- Skull base neurosurgeon Georgios Klironomos, MD, PhD
- Endovascular neurologist Ina Terón Molina, MD
- Neurointensivist Tagir Sabirov, MD
