Motorcyclist From Bay Shore Dies In Orange County Crash
The 32-year-old local man was driving his Ducati on State Route 97 when his motorcycle crashed and burst into flames.
BAY SHORE, NY — A motorcyclist from Bay Shore was killed in a fiery crash in Orange County, NY this past weekend, according to NY State Police.
Leighton Douglas, 32, was driving a 2019 red Ducati west on State Route 97 at a "high rate of speed" when he lost control and was thrown from the bike on Saturday at around 4 p.m., police said.
He was trying to pass a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta over the double yellow lines into the eastbound lanes but saw a car coming in his direction, police said.

Douglas quickly moved back into the westbound lanes but he overcorrected and struck the embankment on the north shoulder, police said.
The motorcycle then struck the back passenger side of the Volkswagen causing the motorcycle to burst into flames, police said.

The Sparrowbush Fire Department arrived on the scene and put out the fire.
The driver and the passengers in the Volkswagen were not injured. The driver of the Volkswagen immediately stopped his car and got out to administer first aid to Douglas, police said.
Douglas was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office.
