Severe Thunderstorms Slam Suffolk; More Than 50K Power Outages
See more photos of storm damage inside the story.

Severe thunderstorms slammed Suffolk County Sunday afternoon, knocking over trees and power lines and causing thousands of power outages.
As of 4:15 p.m., PSEG Long Island said 50,605 of its customers were without power. A majority of the outages were in the townships of Huntington and Islip, according to the PSEG outage map.
Significant damage was caused by straight-line winds and downbursts, the National Weather Service said, but there was no evidence of rotation with the storm so no damage surveys are planned.
