Long Island Weekend Weather: Sunny Saturday, Severe Storms Possible Sunday

There's good news and bad news. If you read the headline of this story, you already know that.

But here's the deal: Saturday's weather will be gorgeous. Sunday's not so much.

Expect partly sunny skies and a high near 80 Saturday on Long Island, the National Weather Service says. On Sunday, expect to get wet.

"There is the potential for strong to locally severe thunderstorms on Sunday," AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Elliot Abrams says. "The system coming in later this weekend will be strengthening, and it is the right time of year to expect nasty storms in such a situation."

There's just a slight chance of showers on Saturday night. On Sunday, though, rain and thunderstorms are likely throughout the day. The best chance for severe storms will be in the afternoon and evening.

As for Friday, (sorry, we've been pretending it's the weekend already), there will be a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly in the afternoon and evening.

Unsettled weather will remain likely into next week.

"With cool air aloft and strong June sunshine heating the ground, midday to evening thunderstorms are likely to dot the Northeast on a daily basis during the first part of next week," Abrams said.

Thursday Afternoon- Mostly sunny, with a high near 71. Southeast wind around 11 mph.

Thursday Night- Patchy fog after midnight. Otherwise, cloudy, with a low around 59. Southeast wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm after midnight.

Friday- A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after noon. Patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, cloudy, with a high near 75. South wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Friday Night- A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 3am, then a slight chance of showers. Patchy fog after midnight. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 60. South wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Saturday- Partly sunny, with a high near 79. Calm wind becoming southwest around 6 mph in the afternoon.

Saturday Night- A chance of showers, mainly after 10pm. Increasing clouds, with a low around 63. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Sunday- Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm, then showers and thunderstorms after 8am. High near 73. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Sunday Night- Showers and thunderstorms likely before midnight, then a chance of showers between midnight and 4am. Cloudy, with a low around 64. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Monday- Partly sunny, with a high near 78.
