East Islip Beach Closed To Bathing

The local beach was among two town beaches shut down to the finding of excess levels of bacteria.

TOWN OF ISLIP, NY - Two more Town of Islip beaches were shut down to bathing due to the finding of bacteria, Suffolk Health officials announced Wednesday.

Both West Islip Beach and East Islip Beach are closed to bathing after officials found bacteria at levels above the acceptable criteria at those locations.

Tanner Park Beach in Copiague and Lake Ronkonkoma’s Islip Town Beach, both of which closed earlier this summer, along with Sayville Marina Park Beach, which closed on Saturday, remain closed.

Beaches will reopen when further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.

According to Commissioner of Health Dr. James Tomarken, bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
