NEW YORK — New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced new closures of certain park facilities as New York tightens social distancing rules amid the coronavirus pandemic. Beginning this weekend all playgrounds, sports fields and indoor buildings will be closed to the public in all New York state parks.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has waived entrance fees to state parks during the COVID-19 crisis, and many New Yorkers are flocking to parks. But concern over groups congregating in the parks spurred these additional measures.

"Visitors should remember they are in a public park. While we are making increased efforts toward sanitation, each surface is only as clean as the last person who touched it," the Parks website announced.

"Governor Cuomo is urging all New Yorkers to stay home as much as possible. If you do plan on visiting, it should be for a solitary nature break. Limit outdoor recreation to non-contact and avoid activities where you come in close contact with other people. If you arrive at a park and crowds are forming, choose a different park, a different trail or return another day or time to visit.

  • Try to keep at least six feet of distance between you and others.
  • Avoid close contact, such as shaking hands, hugging, and kissing.
  • Wash hands often or use a hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid surfaces that are touched often, such as doorknobs, handrails, and playground equipment."

Residents who made camping reservations for the 2020 season can receive a full refund without a cancelation fee. Anyone interested in applying for beach permits should apply online only and not come to the parks offices in person.

Advice for golfers was also included in the statement:

"As per normal operating schedules, most Long Island golf courses are open and select courses in the rest of state. Courses are taking steps to help stop the spread of Covid-19, including increasing the frequency of tee times, removing ball washers and bunker rakes, and avoiding the use of tandem golf carts."
