Central Islip resident Emily Escobar, an applied psychology major at Farmingdale State College, has been chosen to spend the summer at the University of Toronto, as a member of the Fulbright Canada – Mitacs Globalink Research Program.

Escobar - a first-generation American and college student - will be studying Developmental Sociolinguistics, which has to do with child development, and how children learn to speak multiple languages.

Escobar – who graduated Central Islip High School with a High Regents Diploma in 2018 - is planning a career in research. At Farmingdale, she is a founding member of the Farmingdale Undergraduate Research Association, and a Scholar with the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program and Research Aligned Mentorship Program. She has also worked as a geometry tutor.

Community work is also a passion of Escobar’s. She helped build a house with Habitat for Humanity; done beach clean-ups; and volunteered at the AHRC Walk and Breast Cancer Walk.
