Halal Girls & Açaí Bowls Opens In Huntington

HUNTINGTON, NY — Halal Girls and Açaí Bowls, a coming together of two popular foods, celebrated its grand opening in Huntington in September. The halal and açaí joint occupies a small storefront at 44 Gerard St.; where Long Island Beach Bowls used to be.

Long Island Beach Bowls began to financially struggle when the coronavirus pandemic hit, according to Halal Girls and Açaí Bowls manager Ahmed Mayan. The new ownership group came along and suggested a partnership with Long Island Beach Bowls.

"The acai bowl is a trendy food, and [Long Island Beach Bowls] already had it locked down," Mayan told Patch. "The halal food we had, the recipes and everything, are all secured and locked down. That’s how that collaboration happened."

The new eatery is takeout or curbside pick-up only. In addition to traditional halal chicken over rice and açaí bowls, the shop also serves cheeseburgers, chicken gyros and hot wings.

When looking for a market for Halal Girls, ownership settled on Huntington Village as they felt it needed a halal spot.

"When it comes to location, or when people are looking for a residence, you have to find a place that matches you," Mayan said. "The place has to match you, and you have to match the place ... [Huntington] was a very in-the-pocket but city-like vibe on Long Island. The opportunity arose. We were looking for different areas, but nothing really stuck out like Huntington and the village; and even the people of the village, you know?"

The coronavirus has only been a concern for Halal Girls and Açaí Bowls as far as reduced foot traffic goes, Mayan said.

"Once people come into the door, they’re gonna love the food and they’re going to have extraordinary service. They’re gonna keep on coming back."
