Huntington High School
To Host FIRST LEGO
League Robotics Qualifiers

For the 2018-2019 Into Orbit Challenge, the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) teams have been asked to think about the challenges humans must overcome to travel in our solar system for long periods of time. Over an eight-week period, teams around the world grades four through eight will work to build, test, and program an autonomous robot using a LEGO® MINDSTORMS® set to solve missions on an obstacle course. FLL is part of the FIRST (For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Organization, which Huntington High School’s Team 5016 is also a part of. FIRST was founded by inventor Dean Kamen with the goal of motivating young people to pursue careers in science, technology, and engineering. The FLL teams competing in qualifying matches will then earn the opportunity to advance and compete in the SBPLI FIRST LEGO League Championship tournament which is set to be held at Longwood High School at 100 Longwood Road, Middle Island, NY on Sunday, March 3, 2019.

The global FIRST LEGO League competition has been brought to The Island through a partnership between FIRST Robotics and The School-Business Partnerships of Long Island (SBPLI). SBPLI has been supporting teams locally for years, and this year will be the 20th annual SBPLI FIRST Robotics regional competition, which High School Team 5016 will once again be attending this year. Huntington’s Jack Abrams STEM School will be participating in the tournament along with many other competitors.

Team 5016 (High School team) will be at the FLL event as hosts and volunteers for a fun and event-packed day. Team 5016 has been serving as mentors to the younger FLL teams from Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School and loves having the opportunity to work with future high school team members.
Qualifying tournament #4 will be on Saturday the 2nd from 7:00am to 12:30pm and tournament #5 will be from 1:00pm to 6:30pm. On Sunday, Qualifying tournament #6 will be from 8:00am to 2:30pm. Throughout both days of competition, there will be concession stands set up with food and drinks available for purchase. Team 5016 and the Huntington Union Free School District are so excited to host this event and promote the passions of our future generation of science
