HUNTINGTON, NY — Huntington Hospital on Friday announced it opened its Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center. The care center features two hyperbaric chambers, which could help those suffering from certain wounds, according to a news release.

The center is equipped to provide advanced treatment for chronic skin wounds and ulcers, bedsores, vascular wounds, non-healing surgical wounds, diabetic foot ulcers, compromised skin grafts and other injuries.

"Millions of Americans experience at least one form of a non-healing wound annually and the incidence of these wounds is increasing each year," said Luis Davila-Santini, MD, wound care center medical director, via the release. "Many of these individuals suffer from wounds that refuse to heal despite conventional treatment."

These non-healing wounds are usually developed by Americans with diabetes or circulatory problems, according to the hospital.

The wound care center team features physicians, nurses and technicians with advanced training in wound care and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO). HBO promotes healing by increasing the level of oxygen in the tissue and improving the white blood cells' healing efficiency.

"We’re very pleased to be able to offer this type of treatment to patients who are living with open wounds that have not been successfully treated by surgical skin grafts, topical lotions or other alternative solutions," said Nick Fitterman, MD, executive director of Huntington Hospital. "Offering these services in Huntington allows patients an option to heal close to home."

Therapy is performed in one of the two hyperbaric chambers in the facility. The chambers deliver pure oxygen with increased atmospheric pressure, stimulating the entire body's natural healing responses.
