LI Expressway To Be Closed Overnight In Town Of Huntington

The closures will begin this week due to the Walt Whitman Road Bridge Replacement Project, which will last roughly six weeks.

TOWN OF HUNTINGTON, NY — Full overnight closures of the Long Island Expressway in the Town of Huntington are expected to begin this week, the New York State Department of Transportation announced Wednesday. The closures are likely to last for well over a month.

On Thursday, the eastbound L.I.E. will be closed at Exit 49S (State Route 110) between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. the next morning. On Friday, the westbound L.I.E. will be closed at exit 49N (State Route 110) from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Starting on Monday, Oct. 21, drivers should expect both directions of the L.I.E. to be closed weeknights beginning at 10 p.m. until 5 a.m.

During these closures, all traffic will be rerouted onto the Service Road. Access to the westbound L.I.E. will also be closed from northbound Route 110 during all westbound night closings.

Crews will be working on the $28.2 million Walt Whitman Road Bridge Replacement Project, which is constructing a new wider overpass that will feature more lanes with sidewalks and shoulders for bicyclists on both sides of the bridge.

Electronic variable message signs in the area will alert drivers with updates regarding closures.

These closures are expected to continue for about six weeks. As with most road and bridge projects, work may be cancelled, postponed, or prolonged due to bad weather.

The NYS Department of Transportation said it appreciates the patience and cooperation of drivers, and asks them to drive responsibly in work zones.
