'Snow Emergency' Declared for Town of Huntington

As residents prepare for a winter storm, Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone declared an official snow emergency, effective at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday.

In addition, officials say all activities and programs scheduled at Town facilities are canceled.

“The forecasts are for a major storm with blizzard-like conditions that will start overnight and continue throughout the day, making travel difficult,” Petrone said in a press release. “Residents should stay off the roads, and make sure to park their cars off the streets to facilitate plowing and access for emergency vehicles."

What a “snow emergency” means for Town of Huntington residents:

• Petrone may close roads, appropriate necessary equipment and make necessary purchases without following the usual procedures. These rules also apply to the Town Highway Department Town equipment and personnel to assist Highway Department Crews.
• Tuesday residential trash collection is canceled. Commercial pickups are still scheduled for businesses in Huntington Village and Huntington Station that have evening curbside collection.
• HART Bus paratransit and fixed route service are cancelled.
• Town Board meeting that had been scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday been rescheduled for Tuesday, March 21, at 2 p.m. New dates will be set for all of the scheduled public hearings, including the application for a zone change to allow construction of an assisted living facility on West Hills Road in South Huntington.
• Activities at the Dix Hills Ice Rink, Village Green Senior Center, Adult Day Care as well as Parks Department programs (at local schools and at Coindre Hall) and Youth Bureau programs are canceled.
