So Long, Crumbs Bake Shop

The popular cupcake chain shuttered operations Monday.

Crumbs Bake Shop, the popular cupcake chain, is no more.

The bakery, whose Long Island locations once included Roosevelt Field Mall, Huntington, Greenvale, and Woodbury, shuttered its operation Monday.

"Regrettably Crumbs has been forced to cease operations and is immediately attending to the dislocation of its devoted employees while it evaluates its limited remaining options," a company spokeswoman told the Wall Street Journal.

The company launched in March 2003 on Manhattan’s Upper West Side of Manhattan. It went public in 2011, feeding off of the cupcake craze glamorized by HBO’s “Sex in The City” episodes. Known for its gourmet “signature collections,” Crumbs’ offerings recently included a new “Girl Scout Chocolate PB Creme” and even gluten-free options.

Most recently Crumbs boasted 65 locations in 12 states and the District of Columbia, including shops in large malls, according to a press release on the company’s website. It had employed 165 full-time employees and nearly 655 part-time hourly employees in its shops.

But business took a downturn. Last week the company was delisted by NASDAQ, NPR reported. And in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing in May, Crumbs acknowledged that it might "be forced to curtail or cease its activities" given its financial woes.
