Special Weather Statement Issued For Long Island

The National Weather Service has issued the following special weather statement for Long Island:

Temperatures today will warm to near 40, but quickly fall after sunset to below freezing. By 6 to 7 PM, temperatures will start falling into the 20s. Standing water from snow melt will freeze and result in icy conditions on untreated walkways, sidewalks, parking lots and roadways. Use extra caution if out this evening and clear away slush and standing water, if possible, this afternoon. Overnight lows in the teens and lower 20s are forecast by morning.

There's a big warmup on the way, though, on the heels of a string of 13 straight days in which the temperature didn't top 32 degrees at MacArthur Airport. Highs will be in the upper-40s to low-50s from Thursday to Saturday, but there is a hearty dose of rain in the forecast for Friday into Saturday.

Tuesday Afternoon- Sunny, with a high near 43. Northwest wind around 14 mph.

Tuesday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 22. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light north after midnight.

Wednesday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 36. Wind chill values between 20 and 30. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the afternoon.

Wednesday Night- Mostly cloudy, with a temperature rising to around 37 by 5am. South wind 3 to 5 mph.

Thursday- Mostly cloudy, with a high near 48. Southwest wind 3 to 7 mph.

Thursday Night- Rain, mainly after 2am. Areas of fog after 2am. Low around 45. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Friday- Rain. Areas of fog. High near 53. Chance of precipitation is 90%.

Friday Night- Rain. Areas of fog. Low around 41. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Saturday- Rain, mainly before 1pm. Areas of fog before 1pm. High near 47. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Saturday Night- Mostly cloudy, with a low around 29.

Sunday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 33.
