Sports Equipment Swap Raises Funds For Huntington Charities

The "Sports Swap" offers a way to save families money on sports equipment and raise funds for a local charity.

The Huntington Youth Council's annual spring "Sports Swap" at the Dix Hills Ice Rink helped raise hundreds of dollars for a local charity.

Twice a year, the HYC holds the "Sports Swap" where people donate all different types of sports equipment— including gently used hockey, figure skating, baseball lacrosse and soccer equipment— to help save families money and to raise funds for those in need.

The most recent event raised $335 by collecting 125 pieces of equipment, which included ice skates, hockey sticks and pads, baseball gloves, golf clubs and a tetherball set. The funds will be donated to a charity to be selected by the Youth Council.

“We had an amazing turnout, and I was gratified to see the smiles on children’s faces as they got new skates and gear, as well on parents’ faces for making purchases that did not squeeze their budgets,” Councilwoman Joan Cergol said in a press release.

Another "Sports Swap" will be held in the Fall.

“I want to thank the members of the Youth Council for helping to organize and run the event, as well as Bruce Moss of Sani Sport of Metro New York for donating his services and John Parks of D&J Refreshments for donating snacks for the volunteers," Cergol said.
