Town of Huntington Purchases Land in Fort Salonga, Cold Spring Harbor

The two parcels of land came with a price tag of $897,500 and $700,000 each.

The Town of Huntington recently purchased two parcels of land, one in Fort Salonga and another in Cold Spring Harbor, that came with a price tag of $897,500 and $700,000 each.

The Tanenbaum property, a 3.75-acre tract at 1064 Fort Salonga Road, now belongs to the Town. The site, which is part of the Crab Meadow Watershed Secondary Area, will be used as a passive park area with trails that are frequently used by runners traveling to the nearby Makamah Nature Preserve.

This land is also located near a dangerous turn that has been the site of numerous serious accidents. Runners would have to pass by the preserve to enter the trail entrance at Makamah Nature Preserve.

These trails also connect to Meadowlark Park and the Veterans Park Complex. The property had a house and amenities that were cleared and only a dirt driveway and a small clearing are left on the land.

The property was originally proposed for a subdivision and was nominated by neighbors for an open space acquisition. The cost was $897,500.

Three acres of land at 3 Mobray Lane North will add to an existing nature preserve in Cold Spring Harbor. This parcel of land will be part of the Wawapek Preserve, which is part of the former DeForest Williams estate, bringing the total size of the preserve to 34 acres. The preserve is owned jointly between the Town, Suffolk County and the Land Alliance. The Town and the Land Alliance each paid $700,000 for the land. The property comes with some buildings, including a home, a greenhouse and outbuildings that the Land Alliance will renovate and use for educational programming

The Town Environmental Open Space and Park Improvement made its 40th acquisition with these purchases, bringing the program total to 305.02 protected acres.

“The EOSPA program has helped preserve open space, create parkland and improve communities throughout the Town,” Town Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said in a press release. “These two parcels are good examples of how open space purchases improve our quality of life.”
