This Woman's Dog Helped Her Meet The Love Of Her Life

"To think that out of all the places I've lived in our great nation, true love was right in my backyard all along."

For this month's Love In A Small Town feature, we asked Patch readers to tell us the story behind a specific spot in town where they fell in love. For Kerry Walters, this spot is a bench outside of a church in Centerport. Here is her story:

“I met a wonderfully kind, charming, handsome, humble and funny man on his birthday at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs in Centerport, where we sat on what we now call our spot: 'the bench.'

I just happened to be walking my Bichon Frise. I had already walked the dog at Oswego Park, but since it was such a nice day in October, I decided to park and walk him again on the church grounds. This church was the parish that I grew up in, and after moving away after high school, I had come back seven-and-a-half years ago. The man I was about to meet also grew up attending that parish, and we both went to the same high school, although we had never met back then.

When I pulled into the lot, there were only two cars in which is typically a packed parking lot. As it turned out, one of the two cars was his. I met him there only by chance (or fate!), as he was getting dropped off to get his car after having a birthday breakfast with his mom.

After a warm and friendly chat (thanks to my dog wanting to greet them), I asked him without hesitation to walk with me to the water to further walk with my dog. He gratefully obliged and we said bye to his mother and walked over to the lawn, sat on the bench in front of Centerport Harbor. We talked for almost an hour and have been together ever since. This fall will be five years.

That bench is definitely our spot of found love in Centerport, part of Huntington. To think that out of all the places I’ve lived, in different states of our great nation, that true love was right in my backyard all along — I am so glad I moved back to Huntington!
