Joseph Caputo, Former County Comptroller, Dies at 79

Visitation to take place Monday; burial Tuesday.

Former Suffolk County Comptroller and Shoreham resident Joseph Caputo died on Saturday. He was 79.

A Newsday obituary said Caputo, who served as comptroller for a record 24 years, "turned the office into an independent fiscal watchdog" during his tenure before it ended in 2002.

Caputo is survived by his wife, Claire; and six children: Christine Buckbinder, Terese Caputo, Robin Carpenter, Joseph R. Caputo Jr., Michelle Feely, and Richard Labita.

Visitation will be held on Modnay from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at in Miller Place. A funeral mass will be held Tuesday morning at St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church, followed by a burial at Calverton National Cemetery.
