Non-Emergency Vehicles Banned in Brookhaven Town Due to Blizzard

BREAKING: Supervisor Ed Romaine has declared a state of emergency.

All vehicles, except for essential emergency vehicles, must be taken off the roads in the Town of Brookhaven, Supervisor Ed Romaine said while declaring a state of emergency for the town Thursday morning due to the blizzard.

Romaine did not say how long the driving ban is expected to remain in place.

Vehicles that are parked in the street must be moved to driveways or be subject to towing at the owner’s expense. Any abandoned vehicles obstructing access for snowplows and emergency vehicles may also be removed by the town.

More than eight inches of snow had already fallen in Port Jefferson Station by 10:15 a.m., according to National Weather Service snow total reports. About 15 inches in total is expected to accumulate through the afternoon.

Town snow removal crews will be working throughout the day and night to clear the roads until all are safe and passable, Romaine said.
