Rocky Point Driver Sentenced to Two Years for Head-on Collision

Denis Karachopan pled guilty to vehicular assault and driving under the influence.

A 24 year-old Rocky Point man who was driving while under the influence of drugs when he collided head-on with a car driven by a woman in Shoreham was sentenced Tuesday to two years in prison by Suffolk County Judge Richard Ambro.

Denis Karachopan was convicted last year of driving his BMW over the centerline and striking a 2008 Nissan Altima head-on on Route 25A in Shoreham on Feb. 5, 2013. Upon examination of his BMW, police recovered also discovered heroin and drug paraphernalia.

The district attorney’s office recommended a six-year prison term for the defendant. Karachopan pleaded guilty to vehicular assault, assault, driving under the influence and other charges.

The victim suffered two broken legs and other injuries. Her baby who was also in the car was unharmed.
