Rocky Point Tire Sign a Landmark in Town

Fortunately for lovers of local memorabilia when Mavis Tire first moved into the old Rocky Point Discount Tires space on Route 25A, the town stopped them from taking down the vintage sign in the parking lot.

"When we moved in five years ago we wanted to take it down," said store manager Mike Volino.

The company discovered the the sign was actually grandfathered in and there weren't allowed to remove it.

Since that time a certain affinity for the old sign set in and the company researched having it restored. But repairing the light up sign that Volino said was installed back in 1959 is becoming a lost art. One restorer quoted $10,000 to fix it.

For now the sign doesn't light up. There are options.

"We're looking into LED lighting, which is cheaper," Volino said.

Folks around town definitely notice the sign. When people ask directions to the shop all Volino has to do is mention the sign. Many tell him that they remember it from when they were kids.

"People say 'oh I know where that is,'" he said.
