UPDATE: Severe Thunderstorm Warning Canceled

A serious storm was targeting the region Tuesday afternoon.

UPDATE: 5:05pm - This warning has been canceled. The storm has weakened below severe limits, the NWS says. Thunderstorms will remain possible in the region through this evening.

The National Weather Service has issued the following severe thunderstorm warning the region:


* SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING FOR... CENTRAL SUFFOLK COUNTY IN SOUTHEASTERN NEW YORK... * UNTIL 530 PM EDT * AT 439 PM EDT...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WAS LOCATED OVER ROCKY POINT... OR NEAR MIDDLE ISLAND...MOVING NORTHEAST AT 25 MPH. HAZARD...60 MPH WIND GUSTS. SOURCE...RADAR INDICATED. IMPACT...EXPECT DAMAGE TO ROOFS...SIDING...AND TREES.

* THIS SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WILL BE NEAR... WADING RIVER AROUND 455 PM EDT. CALVERTON AROUND 500 PM EDT. OTHER LOCATIONS IMPACTED BY THIS SEVERE THUNDERSTORM INCLUDE SOUND AVENUE...SOUND BEACH...JAMESPORT...AQUEBOGUE...MILLER PLACE...SHOREHAM AND RIDGE.

* PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... FOR YOUR PROTECTION MOVE TO AN INTERIOR ROOM ON THE LOWEST FLOOR OF A BUILDING. DAMAGING WINDS AND CONTINUOUS CLOUD TO GROUND LIGHTNING ARE OCCURRING WITH THIS STORM. MOVE INDOORS IMMEDIATELY. LIGHTNING IS ONE OF NATURE`S LEADING KILLERS. REMEMBER...IF YOU CAN HEAR THUNDER...YOU ARE CLOSE ENOUGH TO BE STRUCK BY LIGHTNING. TORRENTIAL RAINFALL IS OCCURRING WITH THIS STORM...AND MAY LEAD TO FLASH FLOODING. DO NOT DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE THROUGH FLOODED ROADWAYS.
