Storms To Hammer Long Island Friday

UPDATE: Hour-By-Hour Forecast For Stormy Friday

The sun is apparently taking the day off on Friday. Heavy rain coupled with potential thunderstorms will be story the entire day for Long Island.

Moderate to heavy rain is expected to develop by mid-morning Friday and continue into the afternoon, the National Weather Service says. The rain will diminish in intensity in the afternoon from west to east, but it likely won't stop falling until Saturday morning.

Much of the area will receive 1 to 2 inches of rainfall by Friday evening.

The full forecast:

Thursday Night- A 30 percent chance of rain, mainly after 1am. Cloudy, with a low around 49. East wind 10 to 13 mph.

Friday- Rain likely, then rain and possibly a thunderstorm after 9am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Areas of fog after 11am. High near 56. Breezy, with an east wind 17 to 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Friday Night- Rain and possibly a thunderstorm before 3am, then rain likely. Low around 55. Breezy, with a south wind 15 to 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Saturday- Showers likely, mainly before 9am. Mostly cloudy, with a steady temperature around 58. South wind 13 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Saturday Night- A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 50. Southwest wind 9 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Sunday- A 40 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 60.

Sunday Night- Mostly cloudy, with a low around 45.

Monday- Partly sunny, with a high near 56.
