
After sweltering in near-record heat Monday, Long Island is about to be drenched by storms pushing into the region tonight.
Forecasters are saying the thunderstorms will move into the area late Monday night with up to a quarter of an inch predicted to fall before they end around 3 a.m.
Winds in excess of 40 mph are possible along with frequent lightning and torrential rainfall, the National Weather Service says.

The storms are not expected to be nearly as severe as the storms that rocked the Hudson Valley Monday afternoon. A building collapsed in Poughkeepsie and trapped at least one person inside.

Monday Night- Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 3am. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a steady temperature around 75. Southwest wind 11 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Tuesday- Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 86. North wind 11 to 14 mph.

Wednesday- Partly sunny, with a high near 80. South wind 6 to 13 mph.
Wednesday Night- A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 64. South wind 5 to 8 mph becoming east after midnight.
Thursday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 80.
Thursday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 61.
Friday- Sunny, with a high near 77.
Friday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 61.
