3 Park Slope Spots Make Michelin Guide As Best Cheap Eats In NYC

One of the Park Slope spots was among the 30 new entrants to the list of the best affordable 2021 NYC eateries.

PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — The same reviewers that dole out the highly-coveted Michelin stars have given a new Park Slope restaurant the distinction as one of the best spots for cheap eats in New York City.

Winner, a bakery and cafe on Seventh Avenue, was one of 30 newcomers to the Bib Gourmand awards, or those where Michelin inspectors can order a full meal for under $40. The New York additions include the Big Apple and Westchester.

In all, 131 dining options made the 2021 list, the first Michelin has released since before the coronavirus crisis.

The renowned anonymous inspectors will release their more well-known starred selections on Thursday.

Here's a look at what the inspectors had to say about the Park Slope winners:

Winner

This bakery-café headed by the talented Daniel Eddy is an exceptionally perch for bread fans. Nestled in a semi-commercial strip in Park Slope and flanked by restaurants, stores and verdant Prospect Park, it boasts a "winning" location and culinary repertoire.

Regulars know to get here early to score Pastry Chef Ali Spahr and team's house-made goodies. Correspondingly, freshly baked English muffins, baguettes, and boules turned out by master baker Kevin Bruce will have you begging for more. Breakfast sandwiches are a bestseller for good reason, but return at lunch for seriously savory fare, like a vegetable bahn mi with smoked portobellos or an elevated grilled cheese with Jasper Hill Farm Alpha Tolman, cheddar, provolone, romesco and much, much more.

Haenyeo

This is the kind of spot that serves food so memorable you'll find yourself craving the same meal well after your visit. The kitchen is known for surprising diners at every twist and turn, as evidenced by the tteokbokki—spicy rice cake topped with Oaxacan cheese and chorizo. Less Korean leaning but equally delicious items include the fiery tofu stew stocked with seafood and accompanied by grilled ciabatta with seaweed butter. Wind down over warm, light and fluffy beignets along with a sip from their wonderful selection of sparkling spirits. Named for the legendary women divers on Jeju Island, this serene and charming space features white hues, glass frames and brick walls. Affable service augments the dining experience at this local favorite.

Convivium Osteria

Brought to you by Chef/owners Carlo and Michelle Pulixi, this Italian haunt has been known to stop passersby in their tracks. Fast-casual counters may dominate the culinary landscape today, but this homey and quaint osteria—laden with gleaming copper pots and rustic clay urns—aims to reflect the chef’s Sardinian roots.

The menu is built around carefully sourced meats and products that are deftly prepared and presented. Try the tonnarelli con gamberi e pomodoro, a modest dish whose success rests solely on product quality and flavor balance. Braised artichokes are an evergreen favorite; while agnello (pistachio-crusted roasted lamb in a red wine sauce) is a delicacy and deservedly so. Well-priced wines and a handful of desserts make this spot a must stop.
