How To Stay Cool In Park Slope During NYC Heat Wave This Week

PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — With large swaths of the borough among the most "heat vulnerable" parts of New York City, Brooklynites will want to make a plan for staying cool during a heat wave that will descend on the city this week.

The city is under a heat advisory until Tuesday at 8 p.m. as temperatures are expected to feel like 101 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

In Brooklyn, there are six community board districts classified with a Heat Vulnerability Index 5, or an area with the highest risk of heat injury or death. Four of the borough's community board districts fall under the Index 4 classification, the second-highest risk.

To stay cool, New Yorkers should note nearby cooling centers, beaches, community pools, misting stations and other options, emergency officials warned Monday.

Here's a list of where those spots are in Park Slope, which is not listed as heat vulnerable, but borders an Index 4 district:

Cooling Centers:

• P.S. 77 Annex — 62 Park Place
• Seniors Only Cooling Center — 463A Seventh St.

Outdoor Cooling Options:

• Washington Park: A spray shower, several drinking fountains and large swaths of "tree canopy" shade can be found in the park, which sits between Fourth and Fifth avenues and Fifth and Third streets.
• Park Slope Playground: A spray shower, two drinking fountains and large swaths of "tree canopy" shade can be found in the park, which sits between Lincoln and Berkeley Place and Fifth and Sixth avenues.
• Prospect Park: By far the largest selection of "tree canopy" shade can be found in Brooklyn Backyard, which is also home to several spray showers and water fountains. Find a full map of where they are here.

Public Pools:

• Douglass and Degraw Pool: Third Avenue and Nevins Street
• Sunset Park Pool: Seventh Avenue between 41st and 44th Streets
• Red Hook Pool: Bay and Henry Streets
• P.S. 20 Playground Pool: Between Clermont Ave. & Adelphi St
• Commodore Barry Pool: Flushing and Park Avenues, Navy and North Elliot Streets
