NEW YORK CITY, NY — The second warmest winter on record is expected to take a final bow later this week/weekend with one or two (or three!) layers of white stuff before Spring sets in.
"Light snow late [Thursday night] into Friday morning will likely result in snow-covered roads and hazardous travel conditions for the Friday morning commute," the National Weather Service (NWS) said in a "hazardous weather outlook" issued early Thursday.
The real sign that a good dump of snow is likely on the way, though, came in the form of an NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) announcement later Thursday morning that alternate side parking regulations will be suspended throughout the city on Friday, "to facilitate snow removal."
The NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) also issued a "snow alert" beginning Thursday night at 10 p.m.
In anticipation of the incoming snow storm, DSNY workers began "loading salt spreaders, attaching plows... preparing tire chains and notifying other city agencies and supplementary personnel," according to the department.
Government forecasters said they're expecting one to two inches of snow to accumulate by Friday morning.
Temperatures will likely drop below freezing multiple times between Thursday night and Saturday night, according to government forecasters with the National Weather Service (NWS). Combined with some heavy clouds expected to move through the area within that same time frame, NYC is looking at an 80 percent chance of snow Thursday night through Friday, and a 20 percent chance of snow on Saturday.
By early next week, city temps are expected to rise back up to the 50s and 60s — and remain there for the rest of March and April, as far as forecasters can tell.
