SOUTH SLOPE, BROOKLYN — A new "bike boulevard" is on its way to South Slope this year, though New Yorkers will need to wait to find out exactly what that entails.

Mayor Bill de Blasio — who first announce the still-undefined infrastructure project in his State of the City speech — unveiled the locations of the first five "boulevards" on Tuesday, including 21st Street in South Slope. A boulevard will be added to one corridor in each borough before the end of the year, according to his administration.

Little details have been revealed about the boulevards so far, except that they will slow the speed and volume of cars on the street to make it safer for cyclists and pedestrians.

"They’re going to come with a variety of measures to make it safe for bicyclists and connect key bike lanes to each other," de Blasio said Tuesday. "This is all about creating a cyclist-friendly, pedestrian-friendly environment — making it easier for folks to get around from one part of the city to the other."

The bike boulevard announcement comes as de Blasio celebrates his annual "Street Week!" initiative, which so far has included plans to lower certain speed limits and add new busways and bus lanes.

For the boulevards, Department of Transportation Borough Commissioners will reveal specific proposals to elected officials and community boards in the coming weeks, according to de Blasio. The plan is to complete the projects this year.

Here's where the boulevards are planned:

  • 21st Street (South Slope, Brooklyn)
  • 39th Avenue (Sunnyside, Queens)
  • Jackson Avenue (Mott Haven, Bronx)
  • University Place (Greenwich Village)
  • Netherland Avenue (Mariners Harbor, Staten Island)
