Park Slopers Can Get To Know City Council Candidates At Forum

The outdoor forum for candidates for the 39th City Council District will be held May 23 by the Park Slope Civic Council.

PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — A forum at the Old Stone House later this month will help neighbors in District 39 get to know the candidates hoping to represent them in City Council.

The forum, recently announced by the Park Slope Civic Council, is slated for Sunday, May 23 behind the Old Stone House.

"There are both challenges and opportunities lying ahead for Park Slope and the 39th District as we emerge from the pandemic, and our next Council Member will be a significant voice," Civic Council President Joe Rydell said.

"A number of strong candidates have entered the race to succeed Brad Lander, who cannot run due to erm limit. The Forum is a chance for residents of Park Slope and other parts of the 39th District to see the candidates in action prior to the June 22 Primary."

The forum will kick off at 5 p.m., weather permitting, and will be held on Zoom should it not be able to be outdoors.

Neighbors are invited to bring chairs or blankets to the field behind the Old Stone House to watch, according to the organization.

The Old Stone House, Community Board 6, Park Slope Neighbors, Park Slope Parents, the Park Slope Chamber of Commerce and the Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District are all helping to put on the event.

Those interested in attending should RSVP here.

A total of seven candidates are running to replace Lander, who is vying to become the city's next comptroller. Brooklyn's 39th District — once represented by Mayor Bill de Blasio — extends over Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, the Columbia Waterfront District, Gowanus, Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, Borough Park and Kensington.
