A confidence man posed as a tenant looking to sublet his apartment on Craig’s List and stole $1,400 from a Dean Street resident on June 6.
The 19-year-old victim told police that he found a listing for a Park Slope apartment on the site from a man who claimed to be the current tenant looking to sublet and emailed him on June 6 around 3:15 p.m. After agreeing to sublet, the conman told the victim to deposit $1,400 into his landlord’s bank account, who he said was named “Sharon Stanely,” first before he could get the apartment key. Two days after the deposit, the victim went to the apartment building and met the owner, who said that they are not subletting an apartment and Sharon Stanley was not the landlord and does not live there. The bank account in which the victim made the deposit was closed and he was not been able to get in contact with the man he’d been emailing. The crook got away with the victim’s $1,400.
