Try NYC's Best Homemade Pizzas At This Park Slope Pop-Up

PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — While most New Yorkers are familiar with stopping by their local pizza shop for a slice, it turns out some of the city's best — or at least most impassioned — pizza makers are found in small apartment kitchens across the five boroughs.

A new pop-up coming to Park Slope's Fifth Avenue aims to bring these home pizza makers, known as pizzaiolos, to the forefront. Or, more accurately, the storefront.

The "Weekly Pizzaiolo Pop-Up" will bring guest pizza makers each Saturday to Russo's Mozzarella and Pasta eatery on Fifth Avenue.

Proceeds from the pies, usually sold to New Yorkers-in-the-know online, will benefit the home chefs and local soup kitchen and homeless shelter CHiPS.

Featured pizzaiolos include a pandemic-born business who baked pies for New Yorkers in need, a relief kitchen volunteer who raised money by selling homemade pies and the owners of Unregular Pizza, a Union Square pizzeria started through a bartering system during the coronavirus crisis.

WHAT: A weekly pop-up series featuring some of the area’s best home pizza makers (pizzaiolos) every Saturday July 10 through Aug. 28. Proceeds are split between each pizza maker and CHiPS (Community Help in Park Slope), a local community soup kitchen + shelter for young homeless mothers and their young children.

Pizzas can be purchased on-site while supplies last, or pizza lovers can book their pie in advance via sliceouthunger.org. Supplies will be limited, so advance purchase is recommended. Each pizza maker will bake their pies to order using ovens donated by Ooni, a Scotland-based pizza oven company that has exploded in popularity during the pandemic.

Organized by NYC-based pizza nonprofit Slice Out Hunger and Park Slope's Russo’s Mozzarella & Pasta, who teamed with to raise funds for CHiPS, the Brooklyn women's shelter/food pantry.
