PATCHOGUE, NY — A historic Patchogue church was one of four recipients of a $150,000 grant to help with repairs to the roof.

The New York Landmarks Conservancy recently awarded a three-year grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, to underwrite Conservancy Sacred Sites Grants on Long Island at $50,000 per year from 2021 through 2023.

Locally, the money will go towards a roof and masonry restoration project at the 1890 United Methodist Church of Patchogue. The work will help correct years of severe leaks to the church, located on 10 Church Street.

In addition on Long Island, the First Presbyterian Church in Southold, the St. John’s Episcopal Church in Huntington, and the Sisters of St. Joseph’s Sacred Heart Chapel will be receiving a portion of the grant for restoration projects.

"For hundreds of years Long Island’s historic houses of worship have consistently served their communities," Kathryn Curran, Executive Director of the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, said. "These sites give testimony to those missions and must be recognized for their past and present outreach and services. The maintenance of their historic structures offers a continuum to their roles based in community support."
