Boat Parade Canceled, But Holiday Spirit Still Alive In Patchogue

While the parade, a local tradition for 26 years, will be canceled this year, businesses are finding other ways to celebrate the holidays.

PATCHOGUE, NY — The popular holiday tradition in Patchogue will be canceled this year due to the coronavirus restrictions, but residents can still find some alternative festivities in the area.

Chamber of Commerce Executive Director David Kennedy confirmed to Patch that the Patchogue River Christmas Holiday Parade of Boats, which has been a tradition in the village for the over two decades, will not be happening this year. The event had to be canceled due to current COVID-19 restrictions for non-essential events which limit the amount of guests to 50 people.

"As this wonderful annual Holiday spectacle usually attracts thousands, it is impossible for us to hold this event and comply," Kennedy said.

However, some local businesses will still be working to keep the holiday spirit alive in Patchogue while still adhering to coronavirus guidelines.

For example, some of the riverfront establishments will be opening the docks to holiday decorated boats. Drift 82, on 82 Brightwood Street, will once again turn their parking facility into a wonderland featuring characters from well-known holiday specials. In addition, the Oar Steakhouse and Seafood Grille, on 264 West Avenue, will once again bring back the outdoor dining igloos.
