DAR at Town of Brookhaven Fair at Longwood

Col. Josiah Smith and Anna Smith Strong Chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution- a passport stop at the Town of Brookhaven Fair

Regent Dr. Joan Nathan of the Col. Josiah Smith Chapter and Vice Regent Nancy Dorney of Anna Smith Strong co-ordinated the two chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) to be a passport stop for children attending the Town of Brookhaven Historic Fair on Sept. 7 and 8 at the Longwood Estate in Ridge. Supervisor Ed Romaine proudly spoke at the opening ceremony on Saturday. Councilman Jane Bonner greeted attendees with a big smile. Councilman Michael Loguercio enjoyed having this fun activity in his home town. People took tours of the beautiful house established in the 1770's. Children made tricorn hats (tri corner) and Thank-You for Your Service cards for active service persons. "The enthusisam of the children was inspirational and uplifting!" states Regent Dr. Joan Nathan. Deb Dooley, a prospective member of Anna Smith Strong DAR, created the craft of making tricorn hats and the children learned about the history of the American Revolution from other DAR members. Veteran, Lt. Cheeseman and his wife Ellen were there to help and encourage the children as they colored cards which thanked active service members. The cards were made by Cheryl Cooper. Many members took shifts at the DAR tent at the fair. Some of the ladies presented themselves in Colonial dress. Anna Smith Strong members brought a clothesline with a white petticoat, symbolic of Anna's part in the Revolutionary War. A petticoat! What was that about? Do you want to learn more about hisory?
