A few snowflakes fell on Long Island Sunday, but Monday is when snow may cause some problems on the roadways.

A winter weather advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. Monday until 7 a.m. Tuesday for northern Nassau County where 2-4 inches of snow is expected to accumulate. The rest of the island is unlikely to see more than a couple inches.

Rain is likely through Monday morning before it changes back to snow in the afternoon into the evening.

There is uncertainty with the exact timing of changeover and there is the potential for a heavy band of snow just to the west of the island with snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour. If that band shifts to the east, snow totals will climb.

"There will likely be significant differences in snowfall amounts over short distances," the National Weather Service said in forecast discussion Sunday night. "Forecast amount changes are highly likely as this event unfolds."
