PATCHOGUE, NY — Long Island Community Hospital will begin discussions on a potential partnership with NYU Langone Health, the company announced last week.

The two medical centers signed a nonbinding letter of intent to begin discussions on the possible transaction that would bring the two organizations together.

Currently, Long Island Community Hospital is independent and NYU Langone owns hospitals in Mineola, Manhattan, and Brooklyn. The Patchogue hospital, which first opened in 1956, currently serves over 400,000 patients.

"This first step represents a momentous milestone for LICH," Richard Margulis, LICH’s president and CEO, said. " We are excited to bring together two great providers of compassionate care who share a mutual goal of integrating and elevating LICH’s healthcare presence in the community."

The merger would further extending NYU Langone’s healthcare network into eastern Long Island, and making available the company's resources, technologies, and capabilities to the community.

"We are very enthusiastic about the proposed affiliation as we believe that the united strength of our organizations will greatly enhance the delivery of healthcare services to residents of Suffolk County," Dr. Robert Grossman, CEO of NYU Langone Health, said.

Now that the letter of intent has been signed, both parties will begin the process of negotiating before signing definitive agreements and seeking the required approves for the potential partnership.

"While we are proud of our history as an independent community hospital, we recognize the significant opportunity to enhance our capabilities through a strategic partnership, and NYU Langone represents the best partner, based on many synergies, including a mutual commitment to improving quality, medical excellence, a complementary geographic presence, and, most importantly, compatibility of our cultures," Margulis said.
