The project is expected to take between 18 to 24 months. The design plans are expected to be submitted to the State Education Department by early summer and once approved, the bid process begins. The public bidding process will end with awards going to the lowest responsible bidders, and the actual construction process is estimated to take about a year to complete.
The Town of Brookhaven has leased the property to the Patchogue-Medford Library at no cost, and the Medford Hamlet Foundation has already donated $1.6 million towards construction.
The Library Board has also committed $1 million from capital reserves to complete the project and was recently recommended to receive $88,000 in NYS construction aid. In addition, local Assemblyman Joseph DeStefano passed a bill through the Assembly to allow the Library to be built at the Athletic Complex.
"Medford residents have been looking to increase access to their library services since 1966," Library Director Danielle Paisley said. "But, the money and resources were never available at the right time. The Library’s board of trustees, led by president Harold Trabold, committed to finding a space to offer library services closer in proximity to our Medford residents. With these resources in place, the Board knew it was the right time to make the Medford Library branch a reality. We are truly grateful for the community collaboration that has taken place, and are excited to see this project finally come to fruition."
