LONG ISLAND, NY — For those stuck inside due to the coronavirus pandemic, PSEG Long Island has found a way to bring bird-watching to people's homes. The company announced Wednesday it installed two webcams to offer residents a peek into the lives of local osprey.

According to PSEG Long Island, ospreys typically set up their nests on utility poles and transmission structures. Since these nests could damage equipment and cause outages, employees set up nesting areas away from the electrical infrastructure, along with cameras to give residents a chance to watch from a safe distance. Workers have relocated two dozen osprey nests on Long Island and ensured the safety of eight other nests.

"The osprey have made a triumphant comeback here since the 1970s, and PSEG Long Island works to make sure that they can continue to flourish," Dan Eichhorn, president and COO of PSEG Long Island, said. "Especially now, with so many of us remaining inside our homes for the sake of public health, these webcams offer a much-needed front-row seat to the comings and goings of these majestic birds."

The company installed 24-hour webcams at two of the nests that were relocated by line workers during the time of year when the birds are not raising offspring. The first is showing a live feed of a nest in Oyster Bay and the second webcam has gone live from a nest in Patchogue.
