Underwater Friends of the Long Island Aquarium to Host Event to Benefit Community's Four Legged Friends

North Fork Animal Welfare League to hold 1st Annual May Furry Valentine Event at LI Aquarium to Benefit Riverhead Shelter Campaign

RIVERHEAD, New York, May 2017. The North Fork Animal Welfare League will hold its first annual “May Furry Valentine” event at the Long Island Aquarium to benefit the new Riverhead Shelter Campaign on Thursday, May 11 at 6pm. An exciting evening of food, drinks, silent auctions, entertainment and more surprises! After being postponed due to weather in February, this very special occasion is almost here.

Proceeds raised by "My Furry Valentine" will go towards funding a capital campaign to renovate the Henry Pfeifer Community Center in Riverhead into a new state-of-the-art animal shelter. The new shelter will serve the homeless and lost dogs, cats and other animals of the Town of Riverhead.

“The mission of the League is to provide the best possible care for all animals needing protection in our community. Please come celebrate with us and help provide a new, full service, humane animal shelter for the Town of Riverhead.” - Gillian Pultz, Executive Director of the North Fork Animal Welfare League.

This is a project dear to the North Fork and Riverhead communities as the current Riverhead Town Shelter, which has been under the management of North Fork Animal Welfare League since early 2013, is a decades old building in great disrepair, located next to a garbage dump and waste processing plant. Even with the upgrades and repairs that the North Fork Animal Welfare League has made, the facility will never meet its standards for the animals or the residents of the Town of Riverhead.

The new Riverhead Town Shelter will be a model shelter, with an energy efficient design that is bright, airy and accommodating for the animals in the League’s care as well as the surrounding community. The new shelter will be clean, spacious and state-of-the-art, with indoor and outdoor areas for dogs and cats. Areas for animal intake, family bonding, humane education, storage and administration will make the space more functional and ultimately lead to more adoptions to forever loving homes.
