WESTLAKE, OH — Westlake Schools will welcome students back on August 29. Police are asking residents to again pay heed to school zones and school buses.

Westlake police will have special traffic details targeting school zones and looking for drivers that illegally pass school buses, the department warned on social media. The cheapest ticket for speeding in a school zone (during restricted hours) is $203, the department said.

"Do not put our children at risk," the police department said on Facebook.

Here are some reminders for school bus safety during the school year.

  • On any street with three or fewer lanes, all traffic, coming and going, must stop for a school bus with its lights activated.
  • Traffic going the same way as a school bus must stop during the loading and unloading of students on any roadway.

Westlake staff will report to the school district on August 26, days before students arrive at the school buildings.
