Stolen Gun Found During Traffic Stop In Westlake

WESTLAKE, OH — A stolen gun was found when police stopped a weaving car on I-90 in Westlake on Thursday.

At 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, police stopped a car on I-90, near the Lorain County line, because it was speeding and weaving in and out of lanes. The driver, a 41-year-old Euclid man, appeared intoxicated, police said.

The driver also had a suspended license because of a previous intoxicated driving arrest, police noted. Open containers of alcohol were visible in the car on Thursday.

The passenger, a 46-year-old man from Cleveland, watched the car impounded by police. During the impound, police found a handgun in the car. The gun was reported stolen during a burglary in Bedford in 2019.

Both the driver and passenger were arrested, police said.

The driver has been charged with driving with a suspended license and operating a vehicle impaired. This was his fifth impaired driving arrest, police said. He refused to take a breath test.

Both men were also charged with receiving stolen property and having a weapon under disability, meaning they were barred from possessing a gun.
