Westlake Football Pulls Off Upset in Opening Round of Playoffs

The Demons knocked off undefeated Holland Springfield in overtime.

WESTLAKE, OH - The Westlake Demons defeated undefeated Holland Springfield in the opening round of the OHSAA 2016 football playoffs. The team now advances to the regional semifinals where they will take on sixth seed Olmsted Falls.

The Demons opened the game with a 7-7 tie before Holland Springfield ripped off the next 24 points and took a 31-7 lead into halftime. It looked like Westlake's season might have been over. But hope springs eternal in sports and miracles do happen.

The Demons went on a second half rampage to storm back into the game, outscoring the Holland Springfield Blue Devils by a score of 34-10 to end regulation in a tie. It was a massive comeback that sent all the momentum to the boys from Westlake.

A passing touchdown in overtime gave the Demons a 48-41 lead and the defense held strong. The game was over and the miracle completed.

Now Westlake advances to the semifinals on Nov. 11. The team plays Olmsted Falls at 7:30 p.m. at Pat Catan Stadium/Serpentini Field, 20025 Lunn Rd. Tickets for the game will be available Tuesday afternoon. Details will be forthcoming.

The Demons have never won a state title or appeared in a championship game. Olmsted Falls has won one state title in 2000.
