Westlake High Rivalry Football Game Moved

The Westwood Cup, played by Westlake and Rocky River high schools, will now be a traditional Friday night football game.

WESTLAKE, OH — The Westwood Cup football game, played by Westlake High and Rocky River High, has been moved to a traditional Friday night match-up.

The Westwood Cup is Westlake High's opening game of the season. The game will now be played on Friday, August 28 at 7 p.m. The game will be played at Rocky River Stadium.

The freshmen football game will be played at UH St. John Stadium at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 27. Junior varsity will play at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29 at UH St. John's Stadium.

It's not yet clear if full-contact sports like football will move forward this year, due to health concerns over the spread of the new coronavirus. However, state officials recently lifted restrictions banning use of school facilities for training.

Westlake Schools' gyms and weight rooms will reopen June 22, the district said.

"Remember, we are all in this together and by abiding by the guidelines, we are helping move towards the fall and winter will full participation in sports. How we do this and how we follow guidelines will enable us to move towards some sense of normalcy in the athletic world," the district said in a statement.
