5 Halloween Safety Tips from Beaverton Police

Patch treats readers to tips and tricks for staying safe this Halloween.

Halloween is a time of superstition and celebration, with the approaching end of daylight savings bringing shorter days and decreased visibility for drivers and pedestrians. Never fear! The Beaverton Police Department, for whom the safety of the city and its residents are top priority, has shared tips on how Beaverton families and visitors can stay safe during the spookiest time of the year.

  • Adjust to Your Surroundings: Drivers must remember to turn their headlights on at dusk and take time to look for pedestrians and cyclists during evening commutes.
  • Pedestrians at Night: Halloween straddles a time between autumn and winter, when the skies turn darker earlier; as such, the department suggests wearing bright or reflective clothing and turning on flashing bike lights.
  • Trick-or-Treaters: Children going door-to-door must remember to cross the street at corners, using crosswalks and traffic signals, and trick-or-treaters under the age of 12 should be traveling with adult supervision.
  • Strength in Numbers: The department cautions children and others who are mature enough to celebrate without a chaperone to stick to familiar, well-lit areas and to travel in groups when celebrating outdoors.
  • Behind the Wheel: Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30-9:30 p.m. During this window, drivers should remain especially alert for children and other pedestrians observing the holiday.

Following these guidelines ensures a safe Halloween for all. The Beaverton Police Department prides itself as a provider of a safe city, respectfully and compassionately serving Beaverton residents. The department is always exploring opportunities to maintain Beaverton's reputation as one of the safest cities in Oregon.
