Here are the top five stories in Beaverton today:

  1. With the fire season underway, local officials have initiated a burn ban in the greater Portland area. This includes Washington County and the Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue service area. The ban prohibits all outdoor burning but allows barbecuing and small campfires. (KATU)
  2. Jontay Joseph Cox was sentenced to prison last week for an April shooting in Beaverton, according to the Washington County District Attorney's Office. Cox was found guilty of shooting a man while attempting to steal a car outside of the Cedar Crest Apartments. The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a local hospital. (KPTV)
  3. The City of Beaverton posted a job listing for the number two position at City Hall: assistant city manager to incoming Jenny Haruyama. The role takes on a greater load of responsibility as the city transitions to a "strong manager" structure in line with the updated city charter. (Beaverton Valley Times)
  4. The burrito drama continues for runner Shelby Houlihan, who blames a Beaverton food cart for performance-enhancing drugs found in her system. USA Track & Field officials banned Houlihan from competition for four years but allowed her to compete in the Olympic trials last Thursday, pending her appeals. Officials changed course when the decision drew attention from the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee, who reaffirmed Houlihan would not be allowed to participate. (OregonLive)
  5. A local man was killed on Wednesday while traveling in California when an R.V. crossed the centerline of Highway 101, causing a head-on collision. California Highway Patrol investigators identified the victim as Jonathan Floyd, 49, of Beaverton. (KSBW)
