Here are the top five stories in Beaverton today:

  1. Beaverton's mayor, Lacey Beaty, gave an update about the city's use of COVID-19 relief funds at a meeting of Washington County mayors on June 24. The mayor noted that a partnership with Nike and Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue delivered over 40,000 vaccine doses, drawing accolades from Governor Brown. She reports the city is in line for about $28 million in relief from ARPA and state sources, which she hopes to use to help local entrepreneurs and those experiencing homelessness and for initiating a mental health court. (The Times)
  2. Beaverton residents are watching out for furry friends through this heatwave, as evidenced by a spike in reservations at a dog daycare within the city. Gabby Urenda reports that local pet boarding business, Barklandia, has double the number of reservations it typically experiences this time of year. Barklandia notes that they still have room for more pups in need of reprieve from high temps. (KOIN)
  3. Washington County Sheriff's Deputies spent some time this weekend tracking down two "felony elude suspects." Donald M. Santos eluded police Friday, but deputies located him Saturday evening. He was arrested for reckless driving, probation violations and other items. Alden D. French fled from deputies Friday after attracting attention from law enforcement while driving a motorcycle associated with Mr. Santos. He was arrested Friday evening for a variety of alleged crimes, including unlawful possession of heroin, parole violations and reckless driving. (@WCSOOregon)
  4. Outdoor dining has virtually halted in this sweltering weather, as indicated by the closure of Syndicate Wine Bar. The popular spot along the 1st Street Dining Commons cited concern for safety on their Instagram post, but they plan on reopening Tuesday. (@SyndicateWine)
  5. Those longing for cooler days more suited to sports should check out Sarah Lorge Butler's profile in Runner's World of Beaverton-based Craig Engels. The Olympic hopeful notoriously hams it up for cameras, looking like a cross between Prefontaine and Billy Ray Cyrus circa 1992. Engels trains with the Nike team and currently runs the fastest 1500 meters in the U.S. (Runner's World)
