Here are the top stories today in Beaverton:
- With no rain in the last two weeks and extremely hot temperatures, a variety of communities in the Portland Metro area have decided to ban fireworks and/or fireworks sales, including Portland. Although neither Beaverton nor Washington County have taken that step as of Tuesday evening, the city of Tualatin has instituted a ban through July 9. (KGW.com)
- Max Egener reports that the Hillsboro police budget will increase despite protests. City councilors unanimously approved a 5 percent increase for the 2021-22 proposed budget. Hillsboro Mayor Steve Callaway says the city will continue to focus on reforming how the department operates, attributing much of the increase to expected personnel costs. (Pamplin Media Group)
- Beaverton High School's boys' basketball put a cap on the 2021 season with a win against Grant. Although the win wasn't a true state championship, Coach Vancil calls the Red Bracket State Title "a huge confidence boost." (Pamplin Media Group)
- First responders from Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue talk about an uptick in heat-related calls over the past few days. Prolonged heat exposure accounted for the majority of the situations. Reps expect that to change to fire-related incidents as winds increase in our dry region. (KATU)
