Suicidal Man Shot By Police ID'd

Daniel McNamara forced a road closure and a multi-school lockdown during an apparent suicidal episode on SW Farmington Road last month.

BEAVERTON, OR — Police on Tuesday identified the so-called suicidal man who was shot by officers in Beaverton during an hours-long standoff on Southwest Farmington Road last month.

Daniel Robert McNamara, 43, was taken to Washington County Jail May 1 following his release from hospital. He is being charged with one count of attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon, police said.

McNamara on April 25 forced police to close a quarter-mile section of Southwest Farmington Road and put the nearby Valley Catholic schools on lockdown for 2.5 hours while he sat in his truck, threatening to kill himself, before he was injured in an officer-involved shooting — which McNamara reportedly initiated himself after opening fire on police.

Beaverton police were dispatched to a "disturbance involving an armed male" sitting in a parked vehicle near Southwest Farmington Road and Southwest 148th Avenue just after 11 a.m. April 25.

Beaverton police officials quickly requested the assistance of the Washington County Tactical and Crisis negotiation teams, according to Beaverton police spokesman Jeremy Shaw.

Law enforcement closed Southwest Farmington Road between Southwest Murray Boulevard and Southwest 150th Place and put Valley Catholic's elementary, middle, and high schools on lockdown, Shaw said.

Additionally, officers were sent to the school for students' protection, Shaw said.

Just after 1:45 p.m., following more than 2 hours of tense, sporadic communication from McNamara, he opened fire on police, Shaw said.

Officers reportedly returned fire, injuring McNamara. He was taken to hospital.

McNamara does not appear to have any criminal history in Oregon.

The Washington County Tactical Negotiations Team officers who were involved in the shooting are:

  • Hillsboro Police Officer Justin Hubbenette, a 19-year veteran;
  • Hillsboro Police Officer David Hawley, a 2-year veteran with the department who has more than 10 years of total police experience;
  • Washington County Sheriff’s Office Corporal Cade Edwards, a 14-year veteran; and
  • Washington County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Earl Brown, a 9-year veteran.

The county's major crime team will continue to investigate this incident.
