5 Health and Wellness Safety Events Offered by Portland Public Schools
The Portland Public School community is dedicated to the health and safety of its students-take a look at these 5 programs.

PORTLAND, OR - Portland Public Schools has a variety of different programs designed to keep their students safe, healthy and off drugs. Whether you're a student, teacher or member of the community, it's wise to familiarize yourself with these resources.
- Student Success Center is a division of Portland Public Schools dedicated to assisting students who are dealing with social or addiction issues. SCS is designed to train important skills such as anger management, conflict resolution healthy choices and alcohol/other drug resistance. The basic skills component of the program runs from 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. daily for three weeks.

- Insight Class is offered to students in grades 6-12. It's an anti-drug informational class designed to answer two important questions, to students enrolled in Portland Public School who are suffering from drug or alcohol addiction. What is the nature and extent of the drug and alcohol use? What action/intervention is recommended at this time, if any? The class runs from 7 - 8:30 p.m every other Wednesday.

- Concerning Behavior is designed to counteract these problematic behaviors in students enrolled in Portland Public Schools: Poor academic performance, low school interest, sudden changes in school attendance, lack of interest in things he/she used to enjoy, little to no affect displayed, easily distracted, hyperactive stealing from others, frequent lying, animal abuse, running away from home, history of discipline problems, expression of violence in writing and drawing and preoccupation with death. Portland Public Schools recommends that any students who appear to be at risk of hurting themselves or other contact the Crisis Hotline.
- Bullying/Harassment is an issue in environments where children are in close contact. For both students and parents, the Anti-Harassment Agreement is a useful document to review. For students who suffer from interpersonal violence, Portland Public Schools offers plenty of support via their Mental Health department.

- LGBTQ Counseling Services is a division of PPS counseling and mental health support that is indicative of the inclusive nature of Portland Public Schools. This department includes different subsections that cater to the different needs of this population of students. SMYRC support groups, Q Center Mental Health & Therapists Database, Umbrella Community Counseling Project, Youth Guardian Services, GLBT National Help Center and PFLAG: Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.
